Downtown Pleasant Hill's Biggest Empty Store Is Becoming a Place to Eat

The largest storefront in Downtown Pleasant Hill was a hardware store with a garden center out back. The next tenant is a Japanese market hall with mini-restaurants serving sushi, ramen and bento, and it is hiring now. As of mid-October, no one has announced when it opens.

The ground-floor change is easy to miss. The space at 155 Crescent Plaza used to be where you went for a hose fitting or a bag of potting soil. Next it will be where you go for lunch. The rest of the center has been moving that way for about two years, one restaurant opening at a time, so Osaka Marketplace is less a reinvention of downtown than the biggest example of what it has already become.

What the October job fair does and doesn't settle

Osaka Marketplace's homepage has a "Pleasant Hill October Job Fair" banner that links to its jobs page. In September, Bay Area Telegraph reported that the company had listed Pleasant Hill as an active hiring location for "all positions" and "all departments." The paper read that as a sign the store was building a full opening team, beyond a few early hires.

That is real progress. But hiring is not an opening date, and the Telegraph said so in that same article: the project was first announced for mid-2026, that target passed with no public grand-opening date, and the hiring "does not by itself establish a specific opening day."

The Downtown Pleasant Hill directory still lists Osaka Marketplace as "Coming Soon." It also shows hours of 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Sunday. Those hours are on a store page still marked coming soon, so treat them as a plan. They don't mean the doors are open.

Here's where things stand:

  • Address: 155 Crescent Plaza, the former Orchard Supply Hardware
  • Size: about 42,000 square feet
  • Status: hiring, with an October job fair advertised
  • Opening date: not yet announced
  • Directory label: "Coming Soon"

A garden center rebuilt as a market hall

Most of the excitement comes from how the old building is being reused. The City of Pleasant Hill announced the project on October 15, 2025. The City's press release lists the planned foods as sushi, ramen, chicken karaage and bento boxes. Bay Area Telegraph, describing the same plan, reported that the mini-restaurants will sit in a semi-outdoor Japanese market hall built in the hardware store's old garden-center area. A grocery section will sell fresh produce, fresh seafood and imported Japanese products.

So the outdoor corner where shoppers once looked at flats of annuals is meant to become the dining room. That's what turns this from a big grocery store into a place to stay for a meal.

In the City's release, Osaka general manager Kazuhiro Takeda said the store would bring the "flavors of Japan" and that the company was "thrilled to join Pleasant Hill." Mayor Sue Noack described the project in terms of the City's priorities:

The project reflects the City's "commitment to prioritizing the attraction of businesses that are local," and will give residents varied product and price options.

This will be Osaka's third store. According to the Telegraph, the Fremont location pairs Japanese groceries with prepared foods and food-court-style dining, and the Foster City store opened in late 2025. The paper expects the opening to draw shoppers from across Central Contra Costa County, including people who now drive to Fremont or the Peninsula for a wider choice of Japanese groceries and prepared food.

The center got here one storefront at a time

The Telegraph framed Osaka as a major new food and retail anchor for a center that "has added several smaller dining and entertainment businesses in recent years." Recent openings along Contra Costa Boulevard, each covered by Bay Area Telegraph, bear that out:

Business Address What opened Reported
Crumbs 2059 Contra Costa Blvd. Brunch spot at the end of the Downtown Pleasant Hill area, in the former Old Pancake House Open by February 21, 2025
The Royale 2190 Contra Costa Blvd. Brunch spot across the street from Downtown Pleasant Hill Early 2025
Mizu Sushi 2375 Contra Costa Blvd., Suite A All-you-can-eat sushi near the movie theater, in the former Nama K-Street Food space Soft-open phase by May 17, 2026

Mizu Sushi matters most for anyone waiting on Osaka. Bay Area Telegraph reported in May that it had opened in a soft-open phase. Food posts call it "Mizu Sushi AYCE" and list tiers of all-you-can-eat pricing. It sits near the theater, a short walk from Crescent Plaza, so downtown already has a sit-down sushi option before the market hall opens.

Two brunch openings within days of each other in early 2025, both on Contra Costa Boulevard, show that the corridor's food businesses aren't confined to the Crescent Drive core. Crumbs anchors the end of the downtown area, and The Royale sits right across the road.

The October 10 Harvest Festival showed the same thing. It was the first one, presented by the Chamber of Commerce, and it took over Crescent Drive from noon to 9 p.m. Contra Costa News listed the participating restaurants as Batter & Icing, Cantina Jack's, Crescent Bistro, Zachary's Pizza and Vitality Bowls. When downtown put on its newest festival, it filled the street with places to eat.

The downtown calendar until Osaka opens

Until Osaka sets a date, downtown's biggest crowds will come from the holiday calendar. The Downtown Pleasant Hill events page lists the rest of the year:

Date Event Time Notes
Saturday, Oct 31 Halloween Spooktacular Noon to 2 p.m. Downtown Halloween celebration
Saturday, Oct 31 Trick-or-Treat Trail Listed for the day Costumed visits to participating stores
Saturday, Nov 21 Light Up The Night 6 to 8 p.m. The City of Pleasant Hill with the Downtown Merchants
Saturday, Dec 19 A Merry Morning with Santa 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Family holiday morning
Thursday, Dec 31 Noon Year's Eve 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. New Year's countdown at noon

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, so the Spooktacular and the Trick-or-Treat Trail land on the same weekend afternoon. Light Up The Night is the one evening event in the lineup, a two-hour block in late November organized by the City and the merchants together. The two December events both run late morning to early afternoon, which leaves time for lunch downtown afterward. Mizu, Crescent Bistro, Zachary's and the rest of the Harvest Festival lineup are all within walking distance of Crescent Drive.

If Osaka sets its opening during the holiday stretch, these dates are when the center will be busiest anyway. A grand-opening crowd on top of Light Up The Night or Santa morning would make for one of the fullest days the Crescent Plaza parking lots have seen in a while. Until a date is posted, that's only a possibility.

Keeping track before the doors open

Opening news will probably show up in a few places before it spreads by word of mouth:

  1. The Osaka Marketplace homepage. It already carries the Pleasant Hill job fair banner and will likely be the first place to post a store-specific announcement.
  2. The Downtown Pleasant Hill directory page for Osaka. The "Coming Soon" label is the one to watch.
  3. Bay Area Telegraph. The paper said it would update its story once Osaka confirms an opening date, store hours or grand-opening plans.

Until then, the Fremont and Foster City stores show what's coming. Mizu Sushi, near the theater, is the closest Japanese meal downtown today.

Reuse of the old Orchard Supply building will change how the middle of Downtown Pleasant Hill gets used every day. At Brian Rochford, we follow changes like this across the East Bay because they shape how a neighborhood lives and what a home near it is worth.
