With a population of only 17,000, Albany has the warm, congenial feel of a small, community-oriented town. The highly respected public schools in Albany attract young families, who also enjoy waterfront parks and the unique shopping to be found along Albany’s Solano Avenue, which extends from the Berkeley Hills through Albany, and ends at San Pablo Avenue. Solano Avenue is a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly boulevard filled with unique shops, restaurants, and family-operated businesses.
 
Albany has developed into a thriving neighborhood of small businesses, charming bungalows, and cottages, which reflect Albany’s earlier working-class origins. Among Albany’s architectural claims to fame are the 1500 small homes built in the late 1920s and 1930s by Charles MacGregor. MacGregor specialized in building good quality, modest, affordable homes; most of which still stand today.
